As soon as the film has an approximate release or premiere date, whether theatrical, festival or market. The earlier the start, the more time there is to build materials, develop contacts with the press and set a schedule of coverage that fits the wider marketing campaign.
It usually opens with an announcement release, then materials are prepared — director's notes, stills, trailer, pressbook — and interviews and previews are arranged. In the weeks around the release the work with outlets intensifies, up to opening day, and coverage continues to be monitored afterwards.
